Désirée De Lara has been obsessed with color since childhood. Especially orange – the orange of the California Poppy to be exact – the iconic flower at the heart of a giant mural adorning the wall of her flower design studio.  2013 marks the 20th year of dreams come true for Désirée, who turned “wedding-flower-design-for-a-friend” gigs into a flourishing business.

A 4th generation San Franciscan with cultural roots in Mexico, Désirée credits her Mexican grandmother, Mima – who had a green thumb and gorgeous rose garden in East L.A. – for her flower passion. Raised in San Francisco’s Castro during the wild days of the 70’s, Désirée’s mother encouraged creative expression and a love of beauty, while her father – a small business owner himself – instilled humility, independence and entrepreneurship.

A world traveler, from the age of 17, Désirée lived in Salamanca, Spain where she studied Spanish and Iberian History. She continued on to visit many countries including Mozambique, Zambia, South Africa, United Arab Emirates, and Morocco. As she immersed herself in various cultures, she gained new insights on color and form to develop a truly adventurous and global aesthetic, which is signature to her creations.

A graduate of UC Santa Cruz in Cultural Anthropology, Désirée worked at a part-time job in college where she first began designing flowers at a bucket shoppe.  She went on to be a freelance flower designer for international event planners, including the renowned Stanlee Gatti, Colin Cowie and Oprah favorite Jeff Leatham. During this time, she was chosen as one of a dozen designers to visit Qatar and create flowers for the wedding of the Prince in the Emir’s palace; as well as collaborating on design teams that created such high profile events as Oscar and SAG award ceremonies in Los Angeles.

Today, she continues to deliver in style, cruising through her beloved streets of San Francisco with her flower creations in tow. Désirée enjoys being a mother, throwing gatherings in her Victorian home and working on her succulent garden.  In between her mom-prenuer schedule, she manages a yearly stint to Burning Man with her husband.

  • “Désirée transformed an empty field into a magical space. Her design complimented the natural setting while at the same time enhancing the space to make it memorable and enchanting.” – Ameet P.

  • Désirée is a godsend. Desiree gave me a very good rate that included all centerpieces and personal flowers as well as the marigold garlands for my wedding arch. She was very creative and was open to my organic, local veggies and fruit ideas for centerpieces.  I would wholeheartedly recommend Dési.” – Christine P.

  • “Désirée did all of the flowers and lighting for my backyard wedding in Saratoga. She did an AMAZING job and I couldn’t have been more pleased with how things turned out. She listened to our inarticulate design ideas and created arrangements more beautiful than I had imagined. She is reasonably priced and I would recommend her for any type of event.” – Emily W.

  • “I really like that Désirée is an independent florist who doesn’t just focus on the wedding industry. So I felt comfortable with her but was still nervous (as all brides are). But when she came into my suite with her calm and beautiful energy carrying flowers beyond my dreams I knew that she was the best possible choice I could have made. My flowers were GORGEOUS, she has such a talent for bouquets.” – Alan S.
